AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requesting approval for transferring of $1 billion in spectrum AT&T promised as a result of failure of its $39 billion bid to take over its smaller rival. AT&T had assured T-Mobile it would hand over the spectrum, along with $3 billion in cash to its parent Deutsche Telekom AG after pulling the plug from the intended deal as opposition piled up from the FCC, Justice Department, State attorneys general and rival operators. T-Mobile, being the lone major mobile operator in the US having no plans to deploy 4G LTE services, has maintained it requires additional spectrum to keep pace with its bigger rivals. The telco lost 849,000 contract customers in the first three quarters last year.
