Brazil regulator slashes tariff rates
Friday, 27 January 2012 01:29 | Editor

Brazilian telecom regulatory body Anatel has instructed domestic phone companies to cut tariffs by 10.78% commencing February 24. Anatel said the price cut would influence calls from fixed phones to mobile phones and also calls between mobile phones, and draw more clients for operators and compensate for the reduction in revenue. The rate would now be 0.487 Brazilian reais/minute for phone calls from fixed phone to mobile phone, down from BRL0.546 presently. The regulator has instructed a similar reduction from the beginning of 2013 and 2014. Brazil's biggest telcos are Tele Norte Leste Participacoes SA, or Oi; Telecomunicacoes Brasil SA, also known as Vivo, which is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA; TIM Participacoes SA, the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA and Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil S.A.B. de C.V.
