Global tab shipments hit 67m, Apple in driver’s seat

Global shipments of tablet computers reached 27 million units in Q4 2011, up from 10.7 million units for the same quarter of 2010, as per research firm Strategy Analytics. Apple Inc. maintained its grip on the tab market, with its iPads securing a 58% market share. Nonetheless, despite persistent worries revolving around fragmentation, UI and app store ecosystem, tablets running Google Inc.'s Android OS, such as Samsung Electronics's range of Galaxy Tabs and Motorola Mobility's Xoom tablets, made significant progress, climbing to a 39% global share in the quarter from 29% a year ago. While third-party developers have adopted the iPad and now provide around 150,000 applications made solely for the iPad on Apple's App Store, Android tablets provide far lesser tablet-exclusive applications on Google's Android market. For the whole, tablet shipments in 2011 touched 67 million units, more than tripling from 18.6 million in 2010.
